This task aims to draw students' attention to place value when rounding to significant figures. Students much decide to what place value they are rounding and use this to construct a number line, where they estimate the position of the original. I believe this will help students to imbed conceptual understanding of rounding to significant figures. The tasks then requires students to work backward, which could prepare students to deal with bounds and error intervals. It focuses just on integers but could easily be adapted for decimals.
